The launch ceremony for a three-month shopping promotion season was held on April 28 at Nanming district in Guiyang -- the capital city of Southwest China's Guizhou province -- in a bid to boost consumer spending and reduce the impact of the novel coronavirus, according to local officials.

They said the promo season aims to stimulate the stable economic growth of businesses in the district and promote the recovery of the local economy.

The season will run until July 31, with more than 2,000 businesses participating in the activities -- including major commercial complexes, department stores, supermarkets, fresh produce markets, convenience stores, car dealers, home appliance stores and others.

During the shopping season the government of Nanming district and Guiyang Branch of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China will each issue 2 million yuan ($280,800) in shopping vouchers.

In addition, individual stores and businesses will provide their own vouchers, taking the total amount of spending vouchers to tens of millions of yuan --expected to drive hundreds of millions of yuan of new consumer spending.

The shopping coupons can be obtained online and offline. Not only the local government will issue coupons, but also local businesses, restaurants and hotels will issue them, too.

Officials said the major commercial complexes in the zone will also leverage various events to help promote spending.

They will use traditional holidays, weekends, hot social trends -- and a whole host of other opportunities -- to offer discounts and issue coupons to boost spending and achieve long-term economic growth.
