A total of 20 companies resident in the Nanming district of Guiyang -- capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province -- received over 49.85 million yuan ($7.12 million) subsidies in 2019 for research and development, according to a local media report on July 27.

Local officials said the subsidies were offered with aim of increasing levels of corporate R&D and the size of the subsidies ranked first in the city and the province.

Officials said that in recent years, the district has made great efforts to strengthen its support and services for high-tech companies, arrange special funds, clarify specialized services and provide policy guidance.

It has also made efforts to provide support to companies in key areas such as R&D input and R&D intellectual property rights, so as to encourage them to increase their quality and efficiency through scientific and technological innovation.

In 2017, 2018 and 2019, the R&D investment of big manufacturers and services companies in the district came in at 485 million yuan, 2,357 million yuan, and 3.062 billion yuan, respectively.

Meanwhile, the total numbers of State recognized high-tech enterprises in the district increased by 39, 64 and 71 respectively in the last three years, to reach 180 companies.

Officials said that this year, 215 scientific and technological enterprises in the district have applied for national status as high and new technology enterprises.
