Construction of a major housing resettlement project in Guiyang – capital city of Southwest China's Guizhou province – was recently completed and it will start being used in July.

The new residential block, which has involved the largest shanty town reconstruction in Guiyang's Ganyintang area, is located at the intersection of Ganyintang Huaxi Avenue and the Sifang River extension – with Huaxi Avenue to the east, Jiuzhou Lane to the south, the Sifanghe Road extension ramp to the west and the Sifanghe Road extension to the north.

The total construction area is about 111,748 square meters. The work includes the main structure, building decorations, installations, community roads and the greening of the grounds.

The new residential block has been built on the land of the old dormitory area of the Guizhou Diesel Engine General Factory, the Guizhou Huacheng Rubber Factory, the Guizhou Asbestos Products Factory, the examination room of Guiyang Traffic Police Detachment and the houses of more than 150 farmers.

Some of the dormitory houses dated back to the 1960s and 1970s.

Most of the houses were old and had a disorganized layout. The infrastructure was incomplete and Ganyintang was described as having a "dirty, messy and poor environment".

When it is opened, the new residential block is expected to greatly improve the living environment of workers who are in difficulty and to improve overall living conditions. This is seen as being of great significance to the comprehensive upgrading and transformation along Huaxi Avenue and the advancement of urban renewal in Guiyang.

Moving forwards, the project will soon start the owner handover process and the majority of relocated households are expected to get the keys to their new houses by the end of July this year.
