The first phase of Cao Zhuangyuan Street block project has recently exploded in popularity, becoming a hot spot for residents and tourists during the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays.
The urban rejuvenation plan for the Cao Zhuangyuan Street Block mainly features a historical city wall walkway, two cultural relics protection units, four distinctive commercial streets, and seventeen old courtyards.
The recently-opened first phase of the project has three main streets, Cao Zhuangyuan Street, Nanheng Street, and Xiahuguo Road, along with several courtyards.
Notably, Cao Zhuangyuan Street is named after Cao Weicheng, a military zhuangyuan who built his mansion there during the 43rd year of Emperor Kangxi's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1611-1911). Zhuangyuan refers to candidates who finished in the top tier over the years in the annual national-level recruitment exams for officials in ancient China.
Nanheng Street is renowned as a treasure trove of numerous local and exotic gourmet foods, while Xiahuguo Road, named after a patriot movement, is a historic street known for its cultural foundation.
"The once prominent Cao Zhuangyuan Street gradually faded from public view due to aging facilities, narrow roads, and crumbling exterior walls," says a local resident.

"Now, with the transformation carried out by the government, I see the changes and upgrades to the bricks, doorways, greenery, and roads. The business operator of the street block also provides guidance to resident stores, making me confident about future development," the resident added.
At the intersection of Nanheng Street, Fushui South Road and Xiahuguo Road, the striking 3D LED screens captured everyone's attention, adding a modern touch to the district.
"A drama performance was held in front of the Zhuangyuan Building, while a presentation of leading-edge technology was held across the street. It's an eye-opening fusion of tradition and modernity," said a tourist surnamed Mr Zhang.
Moreover, Nanheng Street further highlighted contemporary elements such as live house performances and creative handicrafts.
"The thing that stood out the most to me about Nanheng Street was the variety of food. But now, aside from indulging in the food, there are also plenty of excellent spots for leisure and shopping," said local resident Wang Jiajia.
