Wuchan Art Bookstore revitalizes rural aesthetic education

The Wuchan Art Bookstore in Shuitang village of Nanming district is a charming and innovative cultural gem. Housed in a renovated traditional courtyard home, the bookstore is more than a literary haven; it is where contemporary art from the city takes root in the countryside, reshaping rural aesthetic education through the power of "art+".

The bookstore covers 200 square meters and is designed in a traditional siheyuan (courtyard house) style. Its central hall, with a soaring 9-meter ceiling, is divided into three sections that form the main body of the bookstore. An elegant 8-meter-long bar serves freshly brewed coffee, tea, and fresh juices, while adjoining rooms include six private reading areas, a heritage crafts classroom, and a boutique shop offering art-inspired merchandise.

Su Muran, a graduate of design aesthetics, is the brainchild behind this venture. With a vision to blend art exhibitions and literature, Su has curated a space where books and artistic expression coexist harmoniously. Bookshelves crafted from antique Chinese medicine cabinets lend a nostalgic charm, beautifully complementing the artistic decor.

The bookstore boasts over 3,000 volumes primarily focused on art and works exploring Guizhou's rich local history and culture. "We value beauty in both content and design," Su explained. "We intentionally select books with thoughtfully designed covers and regularly update our collection," she added.

The bookstore is more than just a place to read – it is a multifaceted cultural space where visitors can browse books, view art exhibitions, enjoy a quiet drink, shop for creative goods, and immerse themselves in a serene dialogue with art. Whether for inspiration or relaxation, it offers a peaceful retreat that brings the essence of beauty and creativity to village life.
