Guiyang's Nanming district has become a regional model for rural vitalization through its innovative approach to improving living conditions in countryside communities. By implementing a "two cleanups, two upgrades and two treatments" program – targeting waste removal, infrastructure improvements and pollution control, alongside a "five treatments" initiative – addressing housing, water, waste, sanitation and social practices, the district has carried out remarkable transformations.
Recent accomplishments include the clearance of 176 unsafe or abandoned structures, complete wastewater treatment coverage for all 2,691 households in Yongle township through 57 centralized and 165 decentralized treatment systems, and a comprehensive waste management network achieving 100 percent sorting and recycling rates. The district has renovated 1,732 household toilets while maintaining 21 public sanitation facilities to strict hygiene standards.
What sets Nanming apart is its emphasis on community participation. Over 1,400 volunteers have participated in more than 50 cleanup campaigns this year alone, removing over 1,000 metric tons of waste while cleaning 25 ponds and 11 kilometers of waterways. An innovative incentive system has also motivated residents to develop better hygiene habits.
With over 80 officials trained in the new protocols and 121 agricultural projects under digital tracking, Nanming's integrated approach demonstrates how coordinated policies and community engagement can create sustainable rural development models. District officials plan to expand these programs, focusing on tourism-related businesses that benefit from the improved environment.
