A cultural event featuring the traditional art of horsehair embroidery was held at the Nanming District Library on June 14 to celebrate China's Cultural and Natural Heritage Day.
The event introduced participants to the centuries-old craft of the Sui ethnic group, a national-level intangible cultural heritage item often referred to as a "living fossil at one's fingertips".

Through illustrated presentations and displays of embroidery works, heritage instructors explained the history, symbolic motifs, and unique techniques of horsehair embroidery. Participants learned about the cultural traditions of the Sui people and the intricate process of weaving horsehair and silk threads into elaborate designs.
During a hands-on workshop, instructors combined traditional embroidery techniques with modern aesthetics, guiding attendees as they created their own unique horsehair embroidery pendants. Participants designed simple patterns and experienced the craftsmanship behind the ancient art form.
According to organizers, the event aimed to promote and preserve local intangible cultural heritage by bringing traditional culture closer to the public through interactive experiences. It also highlighted the role of public libraries in cultural preservation and education.
