From philosopher Wang Yangming to reformer Li Duanfen and statesman Zhang Zhidong, generations of influential figures have helped shape the cultural identity of Nanming district in Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, leaving a legacy that continues to influence the city today.
Among the most influential was Wang Yangming, the renowned Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) philosopher who lived in Guizhou during his exile.
During his stay, he developed and promoted the principle of the "unity of knowledge and action", attracting hundreds of followers and establishing an intellectual tradition that remains closely associated with Guiyang. Today, the concept continues to inspire the city's spirit of innovation and practical action.
Nanming's historical landscape also reflects the contributions of visionary builders and officials. Gu Cheng, Marquis of Zhenyuan during the Ming Dynasty, oversaw the construction of Jihong Bridge, the first stone bridge across the Nanming River, while provincial official Jiang Dongzhi commissioned the iconic Jiaxiu Pavilion, a symbol of Guiyang's long-standing commitment to education and cultural development.
In modern times, Guiyang-born reformer Li Duanfen played a key role in promoting the establishment of the Imperial University of Peking, the predecessor of Peking University. Statesman Zhang Zhidong became one of the leading advocates of modern education in China, while educator and journalist Xie Liuyi helped lay the foundation for journalism education in the country.
The district's legacy was also shaped by revolutionaries, engineers, artisans, and countless ordinary residents whose contributions supported the city's growth and transformation.
According to Nanming district's cultural development plan, preserving historical heritage and telling the stories of the people who shaped the district and the city remain important priorities. Through these efforts, Nanming aims to strengthen public appreciation of its cultural roots while carrying forward the values that have defined the district for generations.
